preparedness freak

Being LDS you hear to have a year supply of food and prepare for every needful thing. And then there are people who think your nuts if you have anything in a #10 can. What is a #10 can? Okay I have a family of 7 and a #10 can will feed us and leave lunch for the next day. So it really isn't that big!

The Red Cross is now recommending a 96hr kit. So maybe if the people effected by Katrina may have been better off if everyone had a 96hr kit. WE have a 72hr kit for each member in our family and take little walks with them. Sure even in an LDS neighborhood I bet people think we are nuts. Hmmm, maybe we are. And I'm okay with that.

The LDS church recommends these storage amounts

Suggested Amounts of Basic Foods for Home Storage*(Per adult for one year. This list may vary according to location.)

  • Grains(wheat, rice, corn, rolled oats, spaghetti) 400 pounds(181 kg) 72#10 cans(wheat)
  • Legumes(dry beans, peas, lentils) 60 pounds(27 kg) 12#10 cans(beans)
  • Powdered Milk 16 pounds(7 kg) 4#10 cans
  • Sugar or Honey 60 pounds(27 kg) 10#10 cans
  • Cooking Oil 10 quarts(9 liters)
  • Salt 8 pounds(3.6 kg)
  • Water**(2 weeks) 14 gallons(53 liters)

The above is recommended to sustain life and variety is also the spice of life. So be sure to store things you would normally eat. ANd throw some spice in for good measure. The basics can get really blah without it.

Ther eis a reason the Prophet has been telling us to be prepared, get out of debt and build our testimonies. These are the last days and things will get harder. We need to have a strong testimony of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to overcome the evils in our day. I know this is true!
